Bolivian Expressions and our skilled knitters are eager to share with you our extraordinary apparel. ! What is Alpaca ? The alpaca and its cousin the llama are members of the camel family, native to the Andes Mountains. The vast majority of all alpacas inhabit the highlands of Bolivia, Peru and Chile in extreme climatic conditions. Typically found at elevations of 10-14,000 feet; alpacas are subjected daily to temperatures ranging from below freezing to 70 degrees. These extreme conditions are responsible for alpaca wool's extraordinary characteristics. Alpacas adapted over time so that their hollow fiber keeps them warm in the cold and breathes when temperatures rise keeping them comfortable at all times. |

Why is Alpaca better ? Alpaca fibers have diameters ranging from 20-25 microns - half the thickness of the human hair. The fibers are hollow and air filled, giving it a high insulation value and a lightweight, silky feel. It is five times warmer than wool, much more water resistant and considerably stronger than wool. Alpaca comes in 22 distinct colors and a variety of shades. It dyes easily and always retains its natural luster. Alpaca is also free from lanolin and dander making it hypoallergenic. Alpaca apparel doesn't itch like other wools and is suitable for any climate. Alpaca fibers have anti-static qualities and finally; it does not require dry cleaning, saving you a lot of money and time. Alpaca's unique qualities and its scarcity have made it a valuable and highly sought after luxury fiber. In the past, it was reserved strictly for Incan royalty. It has slowly made its way into the mainstream, and more recently, it has been used to line WW II bomber jackets and NASA space suits. Alpaca's production is very limited compared with other luxury wools such as cashmere and mohair. Annually it comprises just .05% of the world's wool fiber production. Alpacas are sheared only once per year, yielding only enough alpaca yarn to produce several garments. Baby alpaca wool, which is finer and softer yet, is the most prized of alpaca wool. It comes from the first shearing of an alpaca. What these characteristics mean for Bolivian Expressions’ cherished sweaters, shawls, scarves and other apparels is that they are not only beautiful but also durable, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Alpaca's fine fibers breathe, allowing garments to trap one’s body heat in cold weather, yet stay comfortable in warmer weather. They also resist rain and snows chilling penetration. If given proper care, you will be able to pass these beautiful treasures on to the next generation.Discover for yourself the feeling that is alpaca! |
