THE BEST OF BOLIVIA:

The Best Tourism Attractions In Bolivia

This page contains a revolving set of articles on the best of travel and tourism in Bolivia. Most of the articles consist of descriptions of some of the more interesting, although often not well known, tourist attractions in the country. The articles posted in this page are stored in Processed Document Format (PDF). To open, print, or save to file any of these documents, you must use Adobe software. The current cluster of articles consists of several features sourced from a project sponsored by the Sociedad Boliviana de Cemento (SOBOCE) in cooperation with La Razón, a major newspaper in La Paz.

Over the last year SOBOCE has produced a series of television programs and weekly newspaper supplements entitled "La Rutas de SOBOCE". The series highlights various tourism attractions across Bolivia. Produced only in Spanish. Bolivia Today has decided to print in English, synopses of these articles as an ongoing feature of our Best of Bolivia Web page presentations.

El Gigante Blanco

This article describes things to see and do in and around the famous Uyuni Salt Flats.

The Salares or salt flats are referred to in Bolivia as El Gigante Blanco, the Great Whiteout. The Salares de Uyuni are located just over 800 km to the south of La Paz in the provinces of Campos, Quijarro, and Nor Lípez within the Department of Potosí. In the case of Uyuni, we're not just talking about a few dry lakebeds. These are the largest salt flats in the world with a surface of more than 12,000 square km. To add to the spectacle, Uyuni sits at more than 12,000 feet above sea level.

Besides the obvious draws of the salt flats and nearby Andes, in this area travelers can visit several salt-bound islands such as Incahuasi, the volcano of Thunarapi, and the railroad graveyard adjacent to the town of Uyuni. There is even a rustic Salt Palace where visitors can spend the night.

Sur Lípez and Parque Eduardo Avaroa

Immediately to the south of the salares, there are a number of equally spectacular geological sites to visit in the Province of Sur Lípez. Here the Bolivian government recently established the Parque Nacional de Eduardo Avaroa. The gateway to the area is the town of Tupiza.

A short list of attractions in this area include geysers and fumaroles, the unique rock formations of the Valle de las Piedras, the Dalí desert region, Volcano Licancabur, the Chulpares or indigenous burial sites of Villamar, ancient cave paintings, and the famous Lagunas, Salada, Verde, and Colorada.

A side trip to Sur Lípez and the Parque Nacional can be combined easily and affordably with a visit to the Salares de Uyuni.
